What if your chame HATES being misted?

boidsntegus Sep 15, 2004 06:26 PM

I have an 11 months old male jax, and he absolutely HATES to be misted. Even when I mist through the screen at crazy angles so that the slightest of mists float down on him. He just does his best to get out of the spray. I make sure to use warm/hot water and I also use a dripper. What does everyone else do? Do you mist directly on your cham? Any special techniques? I gotta keep humidity up and spraying is a must, but I hate that it bothers him so much. Or is this perfectly normal? Anybody know?

I got mine from a guy named Charlie in the forums. Try chameleon corral, she has some available I think.

My veiled use to be the same way. You are right to use the hot water since it will be luke warm by the time it hits the cham. You should always test this on yourself first. Try not to spray the cham directly but make it so that the mist falls from directly above. I point the sprayer straight up at an angle. I use to use the hand sprayers but they would be a pain to use - make your hand hurt and they didnt create a nice mist. I got one of those manual pump sprayers - you pump it up and press a button or lock the button open to keep spraying. The pump works nice and it creates a pretty good mist. I have tested this theory by spraying the cham directly and then from above. He always tries to get out of the way when I spray him directly but will stay still and drink water around his mouth when I spray from above. Maybe its just how my cham is. My suggestion.

3 out of my 4 chams seemed to hate being sprayed from any mist no matter where it was coming from. Until I read an article on a website (one of the larger Panther Breeders, I don't remember which one) and it said to spay them down (I assumed that they meant to spray just over their head so it will mist down on their face) for at least one full minute to stimulate drinking. It also mentioned giving them a show outside with a mister or hose with a mister for 20 minutes once a week to help maintain their hydration levels. Since I have been steadily misting them for over a minute twice a day, I have noticed all of them drinking a great deal more plus occasionally they will roll their eyes around a lot which the website mentioned that they apperantly do this in the wild to help clean their eyes of any dust or debris that may not have fallen out with normal eye moisture. The 3 out of 4 still act like they don't want to get wet during the 1st 10-15 seconds of spraying but then they settle down and begin drinking. After a week of doing this so far I have noticed less stressing when I begin misting, my male Panther actually seems to relax to his pretty blue after the a full minute of spraying.
