Leopard Gecko Food

tim5580 Sep 15, 2004 08:58 PM

My baby leopard gecko is arriving next Wednesday. I was thinking of purchasing some crickets or mealworms this weekend from the petstore so I can start them all on a gutloaded healthy diet. I got some questions though (like always).
1) For it's main food which is best nutrition wise, crickets or mealworms (I'll be dusting it)? (or other)
2) Are leopard geckos picky about insect what they eat?

Also what is canned Leopard Gecko Food? I read they only eat live prey.

Thanks

Mine wont touch the stuff in the can. I preffer mealies just because im not big on anything that jumps, Try both. If you are getting a baby, Be sure to take all of the un-eaten crickets out of the cage after you feed them. Live crickets can cause a baby alot of stress if left in the cage. Also make sure that the calcium that you are dusting with has vitamin D3, Or that you have a UV light, that helps with the absorbtion of calcium. Good luck!

I have a new leo named Mr.Crowley. He lives in a 20 gallon long tank all by himself. Here is a picture of him if you go to the url below...

I find mealworms ALOT easier than crix! If properly gutloaded crix and mealworms can both be used as the main diet. Another good thing about mealworms is you can put them in a bowl and you don't have to worry about taking them out after each feeding period. Feed carrots as the gutloaded....a day before you plan on feeding your leo. Here's a site that teaches you how to breed/care for mealworms. Breeding Mealworms It comes in handy if you have multiple geckos to feed or your tired of running out to get mealworms. Practically the moral of the story in my opinion is go for mealworms. Hope this helps!

Ive had mine for about ten years and i feed him both crickets and mealworms. I almost always feed him crickets because the other leos and my other lizards eat them but it depends what they have the pet stores in my area often run out of crickets so my lizards are used to both crickets and mealworms. Any way either way you feel like going works. And about the canned food im not sure i have tried it but mine prefur live food but its worth a try.

Dont use canned food, someone's leo i know died from MBD because it ate canned food.
Apparently Silkworms are the healthiest insects around. Feeding a variety is always best. Also some leos are picky others are pigs it depends on the gecko. I've been lucky and mine are pigs.

Good luck

I didn't mean canned dog food. Just get dry dog food. So far I haven't had any problems. Make sure you grind it up really really good.

And i Meant Can O crickets or other canned Leo food.
They are horrible for the health of your leo if you can actually get them to eat it in the first place.
