Another Mealworm Question......

tns2400 Sep 15, 2004 11:39 PM

Ok, I know to keep them in the fridge. I also know to take them out 24 hrs before giving to my Geckos. I also know to gutload them also. My question is, what do you put them in?? I heard oatmeal, bran mash, etc. Will the be okay if I just put them in a plastic comtainer with paper towels and the gutload for 24 hours??

Hi Tricia,
They usually come in bran. I just add some vegetables for moisture like carrots or greens. They still eat in the fridge. I only take them out to feed my leos. That way they are more lively than if you leave them out all day especially when you dust them. If you left them out all day then dusted them then they would just lay there until they died. Then your leos won't eat them.

I buy mealworms in bulk and they don't always come with the meal. I did some research and found out they will eat almost anything. I grind up dog food, oatmeal, flour, and corn meal. It seems to keep the ones I'm not gutloading yet happy. You can put almost anything in to make up your own recipe or experiment. Just remember thats where they get their name "mealworms" because they are often found in flour, meal etc. If you just but the little packages from a petstore it will already have the bran in it. Hope this helps.

What would I gutload them with?? I have a TON of crickets for my Bearded Dragon, and I use Kale Stalks, Oranges, and Tropical fish flakes to gutload them. What would I do for the mealies?? I am so confused its not even funny!

Carrots have the most nutrients. Others use lettuce. In my opinion it gives them mostly water and not enough vitimins etc. Make sure you take the carrots out every day and replace with new or they will mold and kill all your mealworms. Hope this helps.
