Heating for Uro's

phoenix86 Sep 16, 2004 07:13 AM

I'm going to get 2 mali uro's next week. So I'm setting up the tank this week. It's a 125 gallon tank (long so its not that tall but its real wide). Anyways I need to know what types of bulbs I need to get, where I can get them and how to monitor the heat of their tank.

Thanks in advance

We won't be able to tell you exactly the wattage you need, but for heat, you can use regular household bulbs or halogen lamps (more heat for less wattage). There are also "reptile" basking bulbs, but the other kinds are less expensive and work just as well.

For UVB, you will need either a special fluorescent (Reptisun 5.0 is the best) or a Mercury Vapor Bulb. MVBs can be tricky if you don't have a UVB meter, so the fluorescents are probably best. They need to be no more than 12" away from your lizard and have to be replaced every 6 months regardless of if it still puts out light.

To monitor your temperatures, your best bet is a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with a probe. You can get them for about $10 at K-mart, Fred Meyer, etc. in the garder area.

Congrats on your new pair! Hope this helped.
