How do you deal with Salmonella? ProBiotics?

girlzilla Sep 16, 2004 12:08 PM

If your iguana has tested positive for salmonella, what did you do? And how did it work out? Anyone go the antibiotics route?

After testing negative for it twice, Bud tested positive earlier this year.

The vet says it is not a kind of salmonella for which the state mandates that I treat it; so I decided not to give him antibiotics because I know they can be harsh on the digestive tract.

I haven't had any trouble, as far as anybody getting sick or Bud having any symptoms, but I saw this ProBiotics stuff online and wondered if anyone has used anything like that? It's kind of like yogurt culture for humans, only it's not dairy. It's supposed to outnumber the salmonella with "good" bacteria to the point that the iguana actually tests negative for salmonella.

What do you think?

Testing positive for samonella is no big whoop. There are hundreds if not thousands of non-virulent varieties. Only a few are virulent. A positive test for samonella does not nean he has the dreaded deadly variety.

But if you want to suppress them, then pro-biotics will do that.

My iguanas do not have samonella yet I treat them just like I treat chicken when I'm cooking it; lots of hand and implement washing. As far as I know, I've not had a case of chicken-borne samonella, and i don't think I have any iguana-borne things like roundworm, hookworm, and others.
