Possibly stupid Red Eye Crocodile Skink Question

Mothi Sep 16, 2004 05:23 PM

Please don't shot me... this is an honest question, regardless of how stupid it might sound.

Can Red Eye Crocodile Skinks swim? Are they prone to drowning if the water is a foot deep but many outlets to get out is provided?

My reason for asking is I am constantly thinking of what to do with my 150g tank. One thought is to make it half land half water. It will have a river with a lake to one end of the tank, but the land primarily on one side of the tank with multiple islands for the trib to get out and back to main land. The land area would be larger than the 20g long tank currently being used...

I... don't know.

I can say that I've never seen mine actually swim before - they have been completely submerged in the water (slightly deeper than their heads but still shallow enough that they could raise their heads above water by leaning back if necessary), but they don't swim - they walk on the bottom (extremely slowly). If I had to guess, I'd say that extremely deep water is a no-no.

Mine likes to swim and always trys to in her tub, but just incase I giver at most 3 inches of water, they can hold their breath for a while I have noticed.

Do they surface swim or walk on bottom swim? Maybe I can plan a smaller size tank with shallow water instead.

They don't swim near the top, they prefer it a bit shallow but just deep enought to take off and sort of swim.
