a few questions...

alex p Sep 16, 2004 05:27 PM

so I've had Rito for a couple of years now, and I thought it might be time to add a gecko or two to the terrarium so I can see some interaction. The thing is, I don't know that I want baby geckos because I wouldn't know what to do with them (sell them, maybe? give them away?) Is there some kind of gecko birth control out there or something (jk)? Anyway, I was hoping to get one female sometime in the near future; is a 20 gallon tank OK, or do I need to upgrade? Advice on babies n accomodations would be appreciated. Thanks everybody
Alex

First are you sure your ready to breed you leos?? It comes with alot of responsability and once you're female is gravid she'll lay eggs for awhile and the only way to get out of it is not to incubate the eggs. If your totally sure Make sure you do ALOT of research before you get your female. When you do have babies do you want to sell them, keep them, give them away etc. Once you decide think about this; if you're going to sell them try to get a female that when bred to your male will produce popular offspring. Sometimes it's a little harder to sell normal Leopard Geckos. Because so many people are breeding geckos these days designer Leopard Geckos I guess are "in demand" more than normals. Of course some people out there are just looking for a pet so morph really wouldn't matter. What morph is your male?? I think a 20 gal long in enough room for two leos. Or is it just a 20gal?? After your geckos mate and you know she's gravid look for an incubator. Or you can make one. There are tons of sites that tell you how. Do you have enough room to keep gecko babies?? Remember the females once gravid will lay two eggs about every month for 5-6 months. In the end that's about 10 to 12 babies if everything works out ok. You can use rubbermaid shoe boxes for the babies. It's better to house the babies seprately because usually if housed with other geckos they won't eat as much so there for wouldn't be as healthy. Hope this helps. I'm starting from the basics. Make sure you do ALOT of research and ask ALOT of questions. We'll be happy to help you anyway we can.
