Breeding Questions

f33lme Sep 16, 2004 05:34 PM

I am about to embark into Ball Python breeding. I have a couple questions. I have done a ton of research and still have a couple things unresolved.

1. I know all the reasons not to get a WC python as a pet but are they ok for breeding purposes? Assuming you have a snake that has been treated for parasites and is eating.

2. I have read that the males are typically ready to breed by 18months and females typically not until 30. I went to the pet shop the other day and they owner told me that balls can be cannabilistic. I have read no info on this and kinda think hes doesnt know what he is talking about. Has anyone ever experienced this? Cause man would i be mad if my big normal female ate my thousand dollar snake.

3. I have read conflicting info about how long to leave the male and female together for breeding. And if breeding one male to multiple females should they all be placed in a cage together or rotated.

4. Can breeding take place year round if you drop the temps or should you stick to a november to april breeding season and let nature take its course.

5. Any tips someone wants to give a newbie would be appreciated.

just have one maybe two answers but ya..

from what im told.. sexual maturity is based on wieght males you want to be at least 900 grams females you want to be 1500grams. so ya it could be as soon as a year for males and as long as 5 years for females.. the 1500 grams is more for the health of the snake and for the snake to produce the healthy eggs...

balls are for the most part not canibalistic they may stress each other however too little room and they may snapp at each other esp while feeding if you dont separate them.. as long as you have sufficients space.. milks and kings are more cannabalistic..

im still very new to this so if i am saying nething that is wrong please correct me..
