haven't seen this in a LONG time

nobites Sep 16, 2004 06:19 PM

I'm an old no body that had to register for this one.
Was looking at the venomous classifieds section a minute ago, noticed
red red speckled rattlers for sale, i don't have venomous anymore, getting a little slow in the grey years... anyway, saw the rattlers tails taped up so you can't hear them rattle! Thats something that some people did on a regular basis in the old days to send rattlesnakes when you weren't supposed to be sending them!
Looks to me like somebody's landlord/wife/husband/parent doesn't know about somebodys hobby!
too funny ( i thought)
bye now

I've heard of people doing this, so they can ship illegally. They are the people that will stop the market/keeping all together.

If there was just a way to weed out all the idiots. Sigh.

Actually the guy who posted the ad is a very well known reptile dealer. He deals with a lot of venomoids. I have personally never purchased from him, but a friend of mine has. He ususally gets his shipments via UPS, so that probably explains the taped up tail. I always try to explain to my friend that if he keeps purchasing venomous this way he will damage the hobby for all of us. One day something bad will happen then we will all get screwed. He does this to save money on shipping.

I noticed that in those pics yesterday and was wondering what the heck the deal was with the taped rattles, thanks for the info.

Greg Longhurst Sep 17, 2004 08:46 AM

The guy that taped the rattles is not only sleazy for the reason he did it, but dumber than a fece post to boot. There is a better way to silence a rattle than tape, that does not require a second handling (& added danger) to remove.

No, I'm not gonna tell ya. ~~Greg~~

THIS IS TYPICAL, EVERYONE WANTS TO POST BLAME !HOW ABOUT FACTS?
I actualy went in the other day to look at buying one of these ,which I did, they were not taped when I got there,Mark and John busted up laughing when I told them of this thread.they got these in via delta shipped legaly, the tails were wrapped with cheese cloth then an overlay of massking tape securing it to the body(a light soak and it falls off)This wasnt done for shipping,as you vultures want to jump to,rather because there are 18 and 20 buttons on these 2 snakes, they are FANTASTIC,and the shipper did not want to risk breakage while in the bag.
We all have recieved snakes shipped illegaly, people somtimes ask me to do it,(I wont)but we dont allways have control over how people ship TO us.
think about it,if they had taped the tails to ship them, then they would allready be sold and they would have NO reason to advertise them ,would they?
The tape is in the photos for one reason,Mark wasnt there to unpack them, and John wasnt comfortable doing it,but he wanted them listed quick. He never dreamed a bunch of old f__ts would try to stir things up.
Ive said it before and here it is again:"we as hobbiests must pull together to keep our love, not destroy eachother ,"divide and destroy, thats what your helping the gov. to do !

Didn't mean to start a ruccus! Just wanted to comment on something that was done alot, many years ago?!

But if there are 18 and 20 buttons on either of those tails then this old fart as you called me, needs to go back to school and learn how you "young punks" count now-a-days!

If there were 10 segments I would be surprised.
Don't always believe what your friends say.

I dont know if its just me, but I have shipped quite a few Rattlesnakes as I am sure plenty of others have and never had to worry about a rattle breaking off. If one of those snakes was purchased, them why is the ad still up as of today. I have seen shipping labels delivered by UPS to a friend of mine from these guys. My friend has purchased quite a few Rattlers from them this way. I do not condone this practice at all, and me and my friend have had it out over this. Most tail taping is done to prevent the snake from making noise during shipping. I am sure they have received shipments from people who cannot legally ship venomous using this method. Also, if those snakes have 15-20 segments on them, then they are definitly decieving in size. I have a gorgeous pair of rubers that look to be about that big as well, and they have about 6-8 segments. People who practice this method of shipping should not deal or keep venomous.

Ok get the fecal matter out of your eyes!I said I purchased one of these ,and saw the other,They WERE NOT TAPED when I went in.and they actualy had that many buttons !believe what you must,They are great guys and Ill keep buying there, its a shame you have to be down on somthing you dont know, and are getting from your "friend".

NajaKeeper Sep 19, 2004 07:36 AM

It could be that you have purchased one of the snakes and he has not yet removed the ad from the classifieds. I still dont believe that any one of those 2 snakes had 18-20 segments on their tails. However, it does not change the fact that he has shipped out venomous animals via UPS to my friend. I have seen the snakes and I have seen the packing boxes first hand as stated in the previous post. I really do not care who you buy from, and if you choose to purchase from people who do not care about laws then you are no better then they are. I will ask my friend if he can post a pic of the shipping boxes and the purchase receipt with the list of animals on them. They were all shipped in a cardboard box, not in a wood crate as they are supposed to. I understand your decision to defend your friend or whatever he is to you. Did you ever think for a second that maybe he does things you are not aware of ? I suppose you are aware of all the business transactions he does.

You feel this person is honest? There is another website where many people feel he is not, and they do have proof! I don't know this person, and I never said he did anything. I was just saying "people do tape the tails up to ship illegally via Fedex ect."

BTW: from the pic, it doesn't look like those animals could possibly have 18-20 segments (we've all seen plenty of Crotalus).

Just clearing-up my part in this post, incase you were directing any of your posts towards me.

more than anything,my point was, none of us can cast the first stone,
the other website you mentioned blamed nim for shipping spitters Ups Fed ex whatever it was,BUT it was also shown that he was not the shipper !just because it came from S.c. they jumped to conclusions !
My biggest point of this whole matter was ,if we dont stop bickering amongst ourselves, and tearing eachother down,we are all going to loose to the lawmakers and politicians,
thats what Im getting at !

bachman Sep 20, 2004 07:56 AM

I agree. I only wanted to let you know that I don't know this person & was not blaming anything on him. I don't think your post was directed at me, but just wanted to clarify my first post.
