Removing eggs from pygmies enclosure...

trinacliff Jun 26, 2003 01:04 PM

I *think* I've decided to move the eggs that were laid Friday from the R. Brev's enclosure. But, I have a few questions for those experinced in doing this.

First off, with it being almost a week since the eggs were deposited, is it too late to remove them?

Second, what is the easiest way to move them without squishing them? My hand gets so shaky when I try to do things so carefully. I have some eggs that were laid in the bag that my R. Brev's were shipped in...I don't think that they're viable, so I tried picking one up with forcep type things to see if I could hang on to it without squishing...and I dropped it. So, what's the best way?

Third, I know I need to make sure they stay laying the same way that they are now, but what is best to use to mark the top side? (Morgana advised this, but i don't know what type of pen will write on an egg! LOL!!!)

Lastly, and this is a dumb one...where do I find deli cups? You are talking about the things that cole slaw and stuff comes in, right?

Thanks...and please excuse my paranoid questions!
Kristen

You can use your fingers to pick up the eggs. have the incubating container near by so you can immediatly place it into position after digging it out.

Hi Kristen,

try using a large spoon to dig under the eggs. You could carefully remove the soil on top and then once you can see the eggs just spoon them all out at once. Be sure to take soil with you as this will help to keep them positioned.

I'll email you tonight after exam

Please let me know if you have any luck-I recently acquired a pair and the female appears to be gravid. If she does lay I'm going to leave them in the terrarium since all the conditions seem optimal for the eggs to incubate. From what I read the eggs should not be incubated any higher than the 70's and trying to remove and set in vermiculite may be more trouble than it's worth. Good luck and remember to check on the eggs everyday if they are enlosed in an air tight deli cup or tupperware so CO can be released.
