Another crummy litter this year....................

LeeBarrie Sep 16, 2004 07:45 PM

Unfortunatly, they are way to premature. I tried letting them absorb their yalk saks, but no go there. They starting dieing just 30 minutes after birth. Bummer, it was the first full birth I'd ever witnessed. Anyway, after 1 day,, only 6 were left & wern't absorbing yolk. I then tied dental flass around the umbilical & snipped off the yolk. No better though. Finally with just 2 left, I soaked them in distilled water with some virosan & that seemed to perk them up a bit. I'm down to one now 2 days later. I give him around a 10% chance of living though he is looking much better & cruising around the tank. The next time I get a bunch of premies I'll try putting them in an incubator at 88 deg. F in 1/2" of water & see what that does.

Too bad, there were some kinda neat looking ones in there.

It is sad that more didn't survive. However, if only one will make it, how neat that it is one of the most stunning ones. I love that patternless, reverse stripe on him. What a little beauty!

If that one lives I may have to take a quick trip to Vegas just to play roulette.

What are those (ie suriname, guyanan, amarali, etc)? Can you post pics of the parents?

Sorry you are having a bad year. You still produced some of the most beautiful boas to date.

Take Care,
Kemper

Finding a litter of premees, by the time I got home this one was the last one alive. I followed the same proceedures that you've mentionned, thanks to some input from a friend. But like you mentionned they start going septick very fast, so we cut and cleaned the embilical placed it in a clean disinfected container and hoped for the best. When we left her that evening, she was a little grogy but moving around. Unfortunatly, she didn't make through the night. Hopefully all will be better next time, all the best.

I am very sorry for your loss of an incredible litter.....hope that one left makes it and you hit big in vegas. I am just wondering about the temps, pre birth. I have read that babies born in Jan. and Feb. and cooler months are usually big strong babies. Could this be that in hotter months the female is uncomfortable and moves around a bit more and her uneasyness causes premature birth? On the other hand mothers going to birth in Jan.,Feb., and other cooler months have a bigger temp gradient and remain coiled on heat and stay still longer and work more toward heat conservation, rather than the uneasy hot times where they seam to be uncomfortable? This may be another understanding for all of us, and maybe I am just off track. Could you please shed some light on your beliefs about this. Thanks Andy Federico

For the most part, cbb litters born early in the year are all imperator. It's the B.c.c. & B.c.a. that are born late summer into fall. Trying to figure out the premature litter thing is like trying to figure it out in humans. Probably any number of reasons the females drop early. Temp's of course being one of them. Basically, who knows. I havn't had a premature litter in 5 years, this was just a bad year. Sometimes it happens. It was a wierd weather year & there weren't very many people here in Colorado that had good boa years.

If I ever soak baby snakes, it's with unflavored Pedialyte. This has the electrolytes they need. Distilled water will actually draw out needed electrolytes.
