Just curious what Balut is(a fish)? Also you said that your Albigs best feeding response was from rodents, have you ever tried frog legs?I recently ran out of rats and my Blackthroat doesn't like chicks,so while in the store I picked up some frog legs. She almost took off a finger jumping up to take them out of my hand! She also loves shrimp.I would have to say feeding response wise, frog legs, shrimp, rodents ...1..2..3.Thanks.

A balut is a fertilized egg (meaning there's an embryo inside). I don't believe they sell them that way anywhere. You'll probably have to make a deal with a chicken farmer.

but I suppose the same term can be used for chicken eggs. Boiled eggs with 18-day old duck fetuses is a delicacy in some countries.

I've never seen a duck egg here available, but maybe at a Chinese store they would sell them.

...haven't tried them yet! I can tell you though that one time I had a newly imported hatchling rudicolis that wouldn't touch anything at first - then I put a tree frog in front of him! He immediately lunged at the frog! I didn't let him eat it, but just wanted to see if I could get a response out of him. He started eating pinkies a few days later.
Anyway, I see the balut question was cleared up already. The farmer's market that I mentioned sells them, both duck and chicken. They are a popular food with Philipinos, so if you have an asian food, or Philipino food market near you, you may be able to find them there. I pay about 70 cents apiece for them. Cheap!
They also work the monitors abductor muscles pretty well, good for that big, boxy head shape that looks so cool no an albig!

Cheers

Hi BRG,

Balut is a Filipino/S.E. Asian delacacy of nearly full-term duck or chicken within the egg, whereby they take the top of the egg shell off the egg and pour it down your throat, whole, alive. It is a delacacy and said to be aphrodesiac....I tried it once = gross!

However, varanus love them, and perfectly healthy for them. I used to get them in chinatown or in filipino-town around here. Some fish-markets might have them too.

Never tried frog legs w/albigularis, but they sure enjoyed crayfish...pulled the pinchers off before they ate them, then ate the pinchers and went onto the next 15-20 or so...

Nice pic of your albigularis...is the blueish tint normal or is it the photo?

cheers,
markb
