How to deal with ants?

herperboy Sep 17, 2004 12:54 PM

I read in the book The African Spurred Tortoise Geochelone sulcata in Captivity that ants (especially fire ants) can be a big threat to totoises. If i notice ants what should i do, besides removing the tortoise. I want to know because i dont want to use any chemicals.

i've had to deal with ants before never fire ants just the regular ones. fire ants can definetly devour a tortoise pretty quickly especially smaller ones and eggs.
the best defense against them is to not keep rotting food in the enclousure the smell of food brings them around quickly. using and ant steak works well for me i put it near the enclousure but NOT in it . this will steer them away from the enclousure and the poision in the steak will teach them not to come back.
hope this helps.
