How will my leopard gecko respond to a new gecko in the tank?

GreedyG2004 Sep 17, 2004 01:13 PM

I have had one leopard gecko in a tank by herself since March 04. I'm thinking about buying another one tomorrow at the Mid Atlantic Reptile Expo. My question is how will she/shoudl she respond to a new gecko in her tank? Is it wise to keep her by herself if she's been by herself for 6 months?

Different leos respond differently to a new neighbor. Make sure you get a leo that's about the same size as the one you already have. After you get the new one home take everything out of the cage you're going to put them in. Totally rearrange it. If they still don't seem to get along take everything out again and wash the tank out throughly to get any smell left from the other leo out. Put the stuff back in and they should get along fine. Geckos aren't social animals but they do tollerate a cage mate.

i agree with xelda, always quarantine. also, just in case you didn't know, never house males together. they will kill each other once they reach sexual maturity. also, don't house a pair together unless you intend to breed, and they are adults (puts too much stress on the female). i find that two adult females can hack it in a lavish, multi-level 10 gallon, but it's much better to have more space.

After you bring the new one home, you MUST quarantine it (ideally for 3 months) before letting it come in contact with your current leo. Keep it in a separate enclosure so you can monitor its poop and make sure it's not carrying any sicknesses that can pass onto your current leo. You'll also need to save that extra separate enclosure just in case they don't get along.
