I started having similar thoughts a few months ago...
I wondered (and asked at the time), if anyone had ever 'guessed' their hatchling's gender and been later proven correct, because I had noticed what I'd imagined to be characteristics in my hatchlings. I don't think its outside the realm of possibility.
On the other hand, I've got an adult-sized (but still growing) turtle that we named Pat because we weren't absolutely sure of its gender: dark brown skin (we have more colorful females), dark reddish brown eyes (we have females with redder eyes), not flat but not very concave plastron (we have females with less-than-flat plastrons), cloaca positioned closer to the body than any of the males. Pat decided the issue once and for all a week or so ago when he fanned for us.

Maybe, if you intend to keep it, you should take notes of your observations, and in a few years see if you are correct.
Regards,
Stephanie

yes I intend to keep it, I got her from a member of this forum(you can guess who) I know she was incubated at a higher temp and will probly turn out female I just wish I had a suspected male hatchling to compare.. it's an interesting thought though.

I have found that eye color is not a 100% good way to sex a box turtle as I have seen females with red eyes and males with tan/brown eyes. I used to think wether the turtle had a concave or not was an 100% correct way to distinguish between male/female until very recently when I came across a female with a slight (very slight) concave under her shell. Most box turtles I have raised took about 4 years for me to be able to tell for sure what sex it was. Good luck

yes I know how to sex adults I've sucessfully sexed several, and I know they dont usually reach sexual maturity till 4-5 years(though some do take longer)of age, I am not a novice in anyway, but I'm not an expert either, just a thought on my part.. thought it'd be interesting and make for a good conversation as this board is rather dead these days.
