For anyone or everyone.Wild caught or CBB....male or female?

BRG Jun 26, 2003 02:11 PM

I have noticed over the past 17 years or so of owning monitors that almost all of my WC monitors are female.Out of maybe 20-25 monitors over the years,I can only remember(and I don't have Alzheimers yet) having 2 WC males(a Blackthroat & a Sav).Just wondering anyone elses experiences, especially if you breed monitors. Are there just way more females being hatched or do I just get all of them?
Thanks.

In my experience, you see more wild caught males. Mainly because they do not have the complications of reproduction to stress them even more.

Also, I have to wonder if possibly you mis-sexed them. I believe you said you have not recieved eggs. Again in my experience, healthy females, whether WC or not, lay eggs or cycle. If there's no male, we recieve infertiles or in some cases, they reabsorb. I also do nothing to entice such events, no hibernation or photoperiod or anyother overt method to cycle them. We simply feed and house them and the lay. I would think if you had that many females, you would have seen eggs of somesort.

If I were to give a guess, I would say, with our hatchlings, they may be a tiny bit female high. But close to 50/50. Frank

Would wc female juvies grow up to lay infertile eggs with no males(even though aquired as babies)?I have no clue, as I never have tried to breed them.I am clueless when it comes to breeding monitors.I leave that up to experts like you.You have the greatest patterns on your Whitethroats that I have ever seen. They are in a Class by themselves!

Yes, WC individual females grow up and breed. Of course, if they did not grow up, then I doubt they will reproduce.

I really do not understand, when you(people) say, I never tried to breed them. There is no trying, they reproduce when healthy. If you want babies, then add a male and nesting. Those are the hard parts, as its not always simple. But for a female to lay eggs is as simple as raising them up.

I believe, that was written in the first magizine articules about me. I think I said, monitors are the easist reptiles to get eggs from I have ever seen. But, getting hatchlings is altogether another story. F

I've never kept a male and female together.

FR Jun 27, 2003 09:39 AM

That has nothing to do with it, a female if healthy will still lay infertile eggs. I wonder, why all those chickens lay eggs without males. F

I never knew that, although I've heard about it.I guess you(me) learn something new everyday. Thanks for the info.

Well I usually get young WC's & so far haven't noticed much diff. in the sex ratio. Upon observing some specimens at shows it seem that there is no real ratio diff. either, but those are only quick looks not long observations.
I have a male dumerils' that is about 3 yrs. I will say this most of the indonesians were female but the african species tended to be male.

You and Robert B. Both!!
In the past ten years of owning monitors most of mine were all male until just recently. All my lizards now are female accept one. I have never kept more than two monitors at one time now I have four w/ two more on the way. They are a pair that hopefully will give me grandlizards! But most of them (80%) were males and WC ones.
Now I guess I'm going to help out in hording all the girlies!!!
Thanks

I have mainly wooden cages. Gator's cage is 7'x3.5'x3'. My BT's cage is 52"x20"x20". She is using that as a temporary. Send me an email and I can send all the pics of the cages I have. Sorry it's just easier than having to post them on here.
Thanks

On Sobek, She swelled with eggs and reabsorbed them in the last week and a half or so, (a female with large long sex organs).
My BTs were as follows, female (Im almost positive, first BT), female second BT, male 3rd (the unhandleable one), 1st bosc was male, second was a female, 3rd was a male, niles were too young to tell when death or giving them away, my timor is a 3 year old male, my small BT/WT cross is a male, and Sobek my 5.5 ft cross is a female.
