African Clawed frogs eating

DeltaWoods Jun 26, 2003 02:15 PM

I have 2 baby african clawed frogs, only about an inch long. I am having a hard time feeding them though. They cannot find the food i am givinng them and a lot of the time i have to put it on my finger and then let them try to bite it off my finger. Then they chew it up but dont even swallow most of it. I am using cut up ReptoMin sticks. Is there some other food i should be using?

Put some small guppies in there with them, they'll clean up the sticks and be food for the frogs. I just throw a bit of food in for them.

How small should the guppies be? The frogs will eat these guppies also? I really cant imagine these frogs eating anything bigger than a poppy seed but im sure you know more than me. Thanks for any more information you might have.

Actually the whole point of the guppies is for the frogs to eat them. You just get the added bonus of them cleaning up the excess food.

So about how big should the guppies be? Sorry for so many questions.

Well, just get a mix of sizes, and put them in the aquariums with the frogs and see what sizes gets eaten, the smaller the better though.

I use freezedried tubifex squares, broken into smaller pieces for easier eating. My two clawed frogs go ito a feeding frenzy when they see the food. maybe the sticks are too hard for them to easily swallow? I'd try the cubes, they can be crumbled and will spread all around the tank, and the frogs will even dig the remainder of them out of the gravel later.

I tried this for a while, and they didn't really like them, and it ended up just making the water dirty.

I guess that individual frogs really can show preference of certain foods. My two will incessantly gobble tubifex up. Then again, I could throw a penny in there and they would try to eat it They go into feeding frenzy the minute you walk into the room.

Yeah my adults do too, but my two little ones don't . They haven't been "trained" that me coming into the room equaks food yet. I have 4 adults(2 normal 2 albino) and 2 babies(both nornmal). As well as 4 African Dwarf Frogs. The Dwarf Frogs don't respond unless it's running away from me when i go up to the aquarium. lol

Mine go into a feeding freenzy i guess but my fear is that they are not eating enough. They just zoom around the tank but dont seem to be able to ever find the food. They find the occasional piece of food if it lands on top of them but besides that they seem totally unable to locate the food and eat it. I suppose they may be scouring the bottom of the while im not around but im not sure and dont want to risk it. anymore advice would be welcome.

Yes they do tend to be bottom feeders, and scour the bottom after the food sinks. If you can't find any food in the botton of the tank then they ate it all.

I start all my little ones off on a diet of beefheart, bloodworms, crickets, small moths, softened shrimp pellets, and my own recipe for Frog Jello. Some froglets that I got just under 2 wks ago have already doubled their size on my high protein diet. When they get to 1" long, they get beefheart,Frog Jello, worms, and crickets. Another thing they'll accept is the freeze dried Krill when it's absorbed all the water it can. Just cut it up into tiny pieces, and they'll gorge themselves on the stuff.

You can try frozen blood worms, the small ones that are sold in multipacks of little squares for feeding fish. Also something called "Fish Gum Drops" which are very small frozen fish fry. See if they'll take large flakes of fish food. If you can get ahold of pinhead crickets, those might work. Make sure to feed the crickets before offering them to the frogs. Small pieces of diced earthworm (if you're not the squeemish type). At a local herp show in MD a vendor sells salmon chow, and my adults love it. It's soft and sinks, so if you can find it, you might be able to break it up and let the frogs find it at their leisure.
