Our spilotes babies.

I want to thank Dean for his invaluable information. The 12 eggs our female laid in her first clutch had a 100% hatch rate and all the babies are healthy and beautiful. 10 of them of have eaten twice already, 2 have eaten once. They took f/t peach fuzzy mice, most of them took it off the tongs, too. The second clutch is due to hatch at the end of October or beginning of November.

They grow right before your eyes...and will eat you out of house and home!

Anyone know to what extent the orange will fade on the young? Do black and white adults produce the orange offspring as well as black and white?

I honestly don't know, Joe, since these are the first babies I've ever dealt with. Dean could answer that, though...

It depends on the color phase you have. Garden variety spiloties have more color in their yellows as juveniles. With size the color can get washed out to a light yellow. My Mexican spiloties come out with light yellow and bright yellow bands and they stay the same as they get older. My Orange spiloties had a clutch that ranged from yellows to orangy yellows at first. I kept this clutch for several months to see what happened. After two months there were three that looked more orange than the others. These three have gotten more orange over the past year and now resemble their orange father.
But if you are looking at regular spiloties the change will not be significant.
Good luck

You've added two new pics. Cool! I have had that page bookmarked for the past few months

We got them sexed and it looks like we ended up with 5.7. Not bad... but I will be double checking the females just to be sure. 10 have eaten twice, 2 have eaten once, all f/t peach fuzzy mice. YAY!
