Mealworm life expectancy

tim5580 Sep 17, 2004 09:11 PM

If I go and buy say 500 or 1000 mealworms from a supplier, and I keep them fed well and in my fridge (to keep them from turning into beetles), how long do you suppose they would last? I don't really want to run to the petstore to get mealworms twice a week to buy food. Plus they seemed kind of expensive 20 for $2.

I would say two weeks more or less. I always leave them in my room to pupate since I breed them so I'm not exactly sure if being in the fridge would lengthen/shorten their lifespan or not. Hopefully someone else will be able to give you a more accurate time.

I was thinking of breeding them but I am only going to have one baby leopard gecko (for now), so I thought buying bulk would be easier. I'm paying $5 for 100 locally and paying $1 for 100 online. So even if shipping isn't included, I could next day air and still make out.

You can get 1000 here for $10 shipped. This is the best deal I've come across. I buy 1000 every month so I've pretty much been searching for the cheapest possible way to feed all my herps for a month. Here's a page that has everything you need to know about breeding mealworms. Breeding Mealworms Hope this helps!

This brings something else up I was wondering. What size is good for a baby? I was thinking of getting the medium size like 3/4" to 1".

You can get the small to med ones. It really depends on how big your gecko is. If you feed them mealworms that are too big they will get constipated or will throw them back up. 3/4 sounds good. How long is your gecko??

I'm not really sure how long it is. It hasn't arrived yet. It will Wednesday. I held off on shipping until I had a day off for sure. It was sold as a baby so I am guessing its not too big.

Who are you ordering your mealworms from? Medium size should be okay for even hatchlings, but some places aren't very consistent with their sizes. Usually with mediums you get some that are slightly smaller and some that are slightly larger, so you should end up with what you need regardless.

Sorry I had to leave last night like that, we were having a pretty good conversation but I had to get up for work at 4 am. I'm not sure where I am going to order the mealworms from, there was a place that raised them about 2-3 hours from my house, so I thought shipping would be pretty cheap, but it ended up being a ton plus they were charging carrier fees and stuff too so I'll probably go with that $10 shipped place.

Yeah I found another place, its $8.25 for 1000, and they ship it for $5.00 and some change and its close enough so its FedEx ground and its guarenteed overnight because of distance at no extra charge
Plus I forgot the $10 shipped place.

And I made a neat hidebox today, I think its pretty nice.

I wish $8.25 shipped, its $8.25 for 1000 w/o shipping. Shipping is something like $5.30. It's only like 300 miles from my house so its shipped FedEx ground, and its overnight because of the distance, it would be here by the next afternoon. So it's going to be like $13.50 for 1000 shipped.

Bad thing is each time you add more worms, the price drops more, so each time I look at the website, I'm thinking of ordering 2000 it's $3 more, and 3000 isn't much more than 2000 but I have to be realistic, I don't think that I need 2000 for 1 baby. All I'll have then is a house full of beetles and mealworms. Maybe I could get my boa or kitten to switch to mealworms....

HEY..that could work!! lol Yep, I'm pretty sure 1000 will be enough for one gecko. I get 1000 per month and I have lots of herps I also have some left over for breeding. The next afternoon is great timing...when I ordered from Bassets Crix Ranch I think they came within 2 days. (if you order on mon/sun)

I didnt notice one of your questions answered in this post so i will give you my 2 cents:P
You can store the mealworms for at least a few months in the fridge so they dont turn to beetles.
What i do is take them out once a week to warm up and eat for 24 hours then back to the fridge. Just take out what you need and put in some gutload for a day or two before giving to your gecko
