Hi,
My dad has a old Olympus 1.3 Megapixel Digital, but I want my own that will take good closeups, and is around $300. I was looking at the Canon A70. Has anyone ever tried it ? Could you tell me if they are any good, or could recommend another camera?

Thanx,
Nick

I have a canon A70.
hahahha,
its a great camera, and the options it has puts it ahead of any other 3 megapixel camera. I would definitely recommend it. Check out my site, I have tons of pics up there, all taken by the A70.

I have to chime in. Nothing against Canon, but you need to look at all possibilities. I think most Nikon cams will get you a mm or 2 closer than the Canons in Macro mode. Not a big difference, but something. Here's a few of my favorite pictures with my Nikon Coolpix 995.

This is an Albino Japanese Ratsnake; a cultural treasure in Japan.

Mt. Fuji, Japan.

Some shed skin.

After a rain in Kure, Japan.

Jungle Albino.

Male Hypo Tangerine x 2

My SHCT from the Urban Gecko

Jungle Albino Boy after mating

And lastly Albino Eye Closeup

In all honesty, I don't know that the Nikons are better than the A70. Both Canon and Nikon (and Sony and Olympus most of the time) make great digital cams and you probably won't go wrong with any of them. Just don't buy a Mavica that takes a floppy disk and you'll be happy

Good luck

Thanks. That Fuji picture is probably my favorite picture I've ever taken.

I got the cam on Ebay when they were still selling them at stores, but I was unable to get the rebate at the time, so it was cheapest on there. It was brand new; people do that all the time - buy new, get rebate, sell new online.

You can find them new on Ebay for under $400 now. They've put out at least 2 newer versions of the same camera, so if you're interested, check those out as well.

The new Sony I got yesterday is really cool because it's so small and I can carry it anywhere, but in anything than bright sunlight, it simply can't compare to the nikon.

I recently bought an Olympus C3020 and love it! The pics at the link below were taken with the new camera, well the hatchling pics at least. The others were taken with my old HP. They are at the lowest res setting to minimize the size, at the top setting, you can count the bumps on my geckos back. Also, the pics in my signature were taken with the Olympus, also at the lowest setting.

I work the camera dept at work..

the canon A70 is a good choice, if you wanted a little bit smaller, but great closeups consider the Nikon 3100 or even the Nikon 2100, main difference between the two is the megapixels 3100=3, 2100=2... also another great one is the Sony P-72.
Sony and Canon for the audio/video movies
Nikon for great close ups, and small and compact only using 2 AA's as opposed to 4 that the canon uses..

I just bought it, and I love it! Great tips for it are turn the flash off when shooting macro (use natural light), change the white light settings, and use the fast shutter mode. The pics have awesome detail.

This pic is resized from it's larger version:

This pic is cropped out of a very large image closeup of my python I shot.

Pretty Cool. Keep taking them, they'll only get better from here. Let's see some of geckos

Here's one more to add to my ones above. We left birdseed on the back porch the other day and the Squirrels and Birds found it. Knocked over the charcoal in the frenzy to eat it all.
