Screen doors?

crtoon83 Sep 17, 2004 11:00 PM

I was curious would maybe a screen door for a wooden cage work? (I like the wood frame look on glass) so I was thinking of making one and stapling the screen on the inside, use aluminum screen door type screen - I dont think a snake could break through that could they? Would this work? Does anybody have experience? maybe 2 layers on the inside and 2 layers on the outside? This would be a lot cheaper and would also help ventilation.

I have taken both plywood and carboard and made center screens for both my snakes and rats/mice tanks. With the snakes you have to make sure it's secure and doesn't get too cold, as they will test every inch of your work. But with rodents it works great for air flow as long as it is once again weighed down as they will hop up. That has been my long invention around here as plexiglass tops become too stuffy for either party.

You will be looking at several serious issues using a screen door.. For example humidity will be very difficult if not impossible to maintain, injuries to the snake rubbing their nose on the screen, heat retention will be difficult as well.

Your better off using a plexi glass or sheet of glass for the door.

I never even thought about having the problem of rubbing their noses on the screen. I figured that the temperature wouldnt be any problem using heat lights - plus the fact my room stays about 80, but I think that is a good point on hurting their noses. thanks.
