Hi, need some advice ASAP please.......grey tree frog >>

Jennie Sep 17, 2004 11:01 PM

Hi,
I have a grey tree frog of my friends trying to treat. Well, did meds for 14 days & the frog has been off of them for about 1 week now. She is eating fine & seems fine , but , the poop never got back to 100% ! Now, I have seen since yesterday her trying to poop & it comes out some & sucks back in. It's like now she can't get it out, where before it was runny & had mucus in it. It still has been kind of mushy (brown & better color), but , never seen her try & can't go. Not sure now what's going on. She is on p. towels & 1 water dish only. Maybe she ate way too much this week. Put about 8 crixs in there Wed. night & she gobbled them right up + what she ate Mon. night, not as many that night.

Any advice on trying to help her get this out ? What about a drop of mineral oil ? Not sure if this is fine for frogs ? I know it's ok for lizards. Any advice ?

Also, the best thing for her if she is having digestive problems & no meds help her ? I feel let her be until she gets really bad or let her go ? She is native to our area. I would just hate to do that & also hate the thought of putting her down with oragel !

Thanks for ANY advice & help !

I would try another round of medication, if that seemed to help in the first place. One of my frogs also had watery stool and very mucusy...also watched him try to make a bowel movement and he had a very difficult time doing so. Brought in a stool sample to the vet and he had parasites...because the stool is watery and not completely solid, it was hard for him to pass anything through. He literally had diarrhea when he went for a while. The vet prescribed panacur and another medication I cannot remember...but once again if you had a medication that was helping initially, I would try and put the frog on another round of that. If the frogs aren't producing enough waste or solid waste it may be hard or uncomfortable for them to poop. As long as the frog continues eating though, it must be passing something through its system. Maybe try the medicine for another week and see how that does. Once a frog stops eating, then it's a sign that something's definitely wrong...especially if you know the eating pattern for the frog. If the frog's digestive system isn't working properly, efficiently, or just not at all to produce solid, passable, waste, it's probably going to stop eating. Mine ate because it was still pooping...just not the kind of poop it should have, but had a reduced appetite. Instead of 3-4 crickets every feeding it was only eating 1 or 2 and no more. Now it can eat 5 or more! So anyways sorry to ramble on...good luck. Let me know what happens. I'm fond of the gray tree frog as well! Had them as pets for a year or two...and I see them outside sometimes when I'm out in the woods.

Hi,
Thanks much for your advice. Is your frog better now with no meds ? How long did it take to start getting better ? I have had the poop tested & no signs of parasites. Not sure why the runny poo thing ? It is better now , but , not 100% back to normal frog poop. This grey might be older, not sure ? She eats fine. I love the greys, they are really friendly frogs. Thanks for your info. ! Just don't want to keep pumping meds in her. Just maybe she is starting to get more solid poo (which is good), but , now it's hard for her to go.

I wonder if there's some sort of "laxative" you could dust the food with when you feed her...I'm really not sure...maybe ask your vet? The important thing is that she's passing something. And yes my frog is doing fine off the medication....there is mucus in the fecal matter sometimes but I don't believe it's anything to worry about. As long as the frog has an appetite...there shouldn't be anything majorly wrong. She probably wouldn't eat if she wasn't able to pass it through her intestines. I believe the treatment was about 2 weeks...and during the two weeks is when it went back to normal. My frog literally had diarrhea, it just wasn't going all the time...that's just the consistency it came out as. Another question I have is where and how do you feed the frogs? If you let the crickets loose in her cage and there's products, such as larger wood chips or small stones, she may swallow them as she swallows a cricket. That could cause a blockage in the intestines... but then I believe she wouldn't be eating at all. I also am going to have to agree with you on the grey tree frog being friendly! I also had one a few years back and it really never tried to get away! Good luck!

Hi,
Yes, I know about the bedding thing. I have her on paper towels & my friend that had her before I started caring for her had her on Bed-a-Beast. I think she has some intestine thing going on. She is still eating fine. I will just watch & see. I hate to keep putting meds in her system. I did 2 kinds of meds for 14 days to help with the mucus & runny poop. Just will keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for your advice,
Jennie
