Roundworms

splendorit Sep 18, 2004 12:28 AM

My cat has been diagnosed with roundworms (ascarids). Is there any chance that my bearded could become infected? Not that I let him crawl in my cat's litter box or anything; I just don't want to put him at risk for any parasite.

Furthermore... are there any types of worm parasites that do infect bearded dragons?

I am not sure if roundworms are as species specific as other parasites. It certainly wouldn't hurt to take a fecal from your dragon to the vet for testing. To avoid cross contamination, deffinitely wash your hands throughoutly before handling your dragon, food dishes, prey items and salads. Don't let your dragon run around anywhere your cat commonly lies or where her litterbox is. Probably be best to keep your cat away from your dragon completely.

Bearded dragons can get several kinds of worms and parasites, including round worms. They can also have hookworms, tapeworms, coccidia (and other protozoans), pinworms, flagellates and others.

I'd tend to say "No" main reason is most parasites are host specific.... and often a common name is used for a "Kind of" parasite but the actual parasite may be completly different and not even related other than say "it's a segmented worm"

and differecnes in the bology of a reptile from that of a mamal
such as body tempature.

now a dog getting worms from a cat -- much more possible.
