Probing question.

kwe May 14, 2003 09:54 PM

An other season, and no action between my diamonds. I am starting to think I may have two females, I purchased these guys about five years ago as young adults from different people. As far as I could tell, the sex I was told was correct, I never popped or probed the two of them but I did notice much larger spurs and hemipenal buldges on the so called male, which is a much smaller animal(male is 5.5ft, fem is 7 ft). My gut feeling is that I do have a pair and they are just being typical hard to breed snakes. I am in So. Cal. and they are outside year round which I thought would increase my chances. I am thinking of probing the two, I just have to find my kit, and I was hoping someone would have some tips. I work primarily with lizards. Thanks. Kevin Brown

In Pythons of the World, the Barkers discuss probing diamonds. They recommend using a large diameter probe. According to them, a small diameter probe is often used to sex diamonds because it is thought that they are difficult to sex. In females, this small diameter probe is then able to penetrate through some membrane more easily. It will then be able to be pushed deeper, making it appear to be a male. I have no experience with this myself, though.
