How to feed Crickets to a Crested?

adman76 Sep 18, 2004 08:11 AM

Hi I have a pair of crested which I put in a 30 gallon tank. Problem is, the tank is set up with soil and lots of plants. So how should I give the crickets to them? Should I just throw some in? Would they be able to find the crisckets in such a big place? There are lots of places for the crickets to hide in the tank i.e. under rocks, plants, in the soil etc etc. Please advise.

1. Is this an adult pair? Or two babys?
If this is babies or juvies I would tell you to keep them in a smaller area with some vertical climbing/hiding surfaces and a bare bottom. This setup allows you to make sure they are getting enough to eat and monitor their growth.

2. Now If we are talking mature geckos there is no cooler way to keep them than in a fully decorated natural looking taank. I have kept a pair in the setup pictured below for the last 3.5 years. This is a 55 and they have no problem finding or catching the crickets. In fact as soon as the light turns off they both magicaly appear at the end were I "dump" the crickets in and place the dish for cgd. Dont underestimate their hunting ability.

Watch and listen for hiding crickets, make sure decorations are not toxic, don't feel bad when they trample your display and you will both enjoy!
Oh yeah babies are really hard to find so try to make a nesting spot to find any eggs.

for all my lizards, i put em in a simple little carry cage with a few branches, and throw some crickets in there. its really easy this way cause i can keep track of if theyre eating and no crix are wasted. and i always just throw some in the tanks anyway after i feed em all seperate.

Nice setup gecco. Don't worry, if they are an adult pair then they will find pretty easily regardlesss of hiding places. If you want to make sure they are eating however, when you feed babyfood or watevery feed by hand. Watch for signs of thinness aswell, if they start losing weoght feed some chicken babyfood for protein and fruit babyfood. As for crickets, turn off the lights, then turn on a lamp so you can see inside the enclosure but when you look at the gecko, it's pupils are still large and round. They will hunt only at this time when there is no or minimal light. Just put one near the gecko so it sees it, then watch it pounce.

They are juvies I think. They are about 4 inches snout to tail.
Thanks!
