Identifying a South Florida King

joeycoco98 Sep 18, 2004 08:54 AM

In 2000 I was sold a snake that was suppose to be a South Florida King. She has a lot of yellow but not completely yellow. Are there any other charateristic I should look for to determine if the snake really is a SFK?

Thanks,
Miller

The south forida king (aka brooksi or brooks king) is much like the problenm we have with the Okatee corn. When someone has a nice corn they call it an Okatee. But it odes not mean it came from the the Hunt Club popularized by Carl Kaufelds books.

If you want to know for sure check the origins of the animal through the breeder/dealer before you buy.

Thanks for the reply. I know to ask for locality information now but back in 2000 I was switching from Burms and Boas to Kingsnakes so I had much less knowledge then. I guess the real question is are all South Florida Kings completely yellow or is there some accepted variance in appearance. I have one pic of her in the photo gallery.

Thanks again for the reply,
Miller

Yes there is a lot of varience with the south florida kings. When searching for them, you will find some nice high yellows and some dark ugly ones under the same board.

So to answer your question. Yes the south florida locale will have both. They will vary within the same clutch. However specimens that have been selectively bred for generations are more likely to be high yellows.

Nice snake by the way. What are you going to breed it with?

...well I have been looking for someone local with a male South Florida here in Houston. Otherwise, I will have to buy a male at some point. I have never bred any of my snakes before so I wanted to give it a try.

If the snake in your picture is the one you are refering to, then you have a South Florida king, but definitly not a Brooks. It looks more like some of the yellows I have seen collected just south of lake Okeechobee.
