outdoor enclosures

overhaul Sep 18, 2004 09:22 AM

forgive all my posts, but I'm on a mission. This is my last question for the time being, I think.

I have a very large back yard and would like to look into creating an area where I could let my dragon out for a while each day. I have dogs, however, who would love to 'play' with him and we've been known to have large predatory birds down here so I need an enclosed area. ... but not glass, of course.

Does anyone know of something that would serve this purpose?

Finally all my trips to Florida have payed off!

I've seen people in Florida who have build an entire screened room the size of their backyard. If you could get metal mesh you could build a room out of it.

See the people fence in their entire back yard, then they hire a contractor or someone to build a mesh enclosure that is built into the fence (they drill holes and connect the bottom of the cage to the fence). It might cost a lot if you do the entire back yard. I've only seen people do this for their birds though, big birds like Macaw's, african grays, and amazon red heads.

If I were you I'd call a landscaping company where you live and ask them if they can build something for you or if they could explain to you how to build it yourself.

If you only intend to let your dragon outside for short periods of time (and this should be supervised) one of those repteriums or all screen cages can be perfect and deffinitely a cheaper alternative. Or you can build a screen cage with aluminum screen and wood. The dogs will have to be kept away, either by building a fenced off area for your bearded dragon cage or tie the dogs away from where your dragon is kept.

The important thing to remember is the dragon needs cool shelter to get out of the sun when he's too warm. ALso you want an overhang and sturdy cover so birds of prey or other animals can't get into the cage. You can use a leanto to cover one edge of a cage and strong fencing for the rest of the room or wire mesh (ie hardware cloth) instead of screen. The hardware mesh is sturdy enough to keep most animals out and the bearded dragon in without blocking the view. Plywood or other sheet wood can be used to cover one part of the top and sides to limit exposure to the 'great big wide world'.
