Aggressive Female? Anyone seen this??

MrHobby Sep 18, 2004 12:23 PM

I have 2 female Leos that have been living together for 18 months. Over the summer I have seen some marks on the slightly smaller female. I finally witnessed the older female attack the younger one. They existed perfectly together for over a year. Now that they are a similar size, there seems to be an issue. They have both stopped eating and the older one has lost some weight. I will be moving one into another cage ASAP. Has anyone seen this aggression develop after 1 year? Any suggestions on something else that may be happening?
Thanks

well a few things, you said one was smaller? Size difference will create bullying, also are you Sure they're both female?

They maybe both male/one may be male.
And how many hides are there? Its usually 2 per gecko. Its a good thing you seperated them though.

I have 2 hides and they are both female. When they were first placed together, their size difference was distinctive. Now, they are almost identical size and that is when the aggression started. Maybe the once larger female feels threatened???
Thanks

i would guess you are keeping them in an enclosure too small for two adult geckoes. some geckoes just enver get friendly. and 2 hides total is too few for 2 geckoes, unless they are both large & you have a separate humid hide.

They are currently in a 50 gal. tank with 2 identical hides with heat pads. I have 2 additional hides inside, but they never use them ( no heats pads under these ). What seems so odd is that they appeared friendly to each other for over a year. Even now they often sleep side by side in the same hide?? I guess the only thing left to try is two different tanks. Thank you for the advice.
