Anyone raise Gerbils for feeders?

CanyonCrawler Sep 18, 2004 02:44 PM

I just bought a trio of Black Gerbils and I am going to try to breed these instead of typical mice and rats. They were $5.00 ea to start.
If anyone has any info on this please let me know.
thanks
Andrew G

Before I was a teenager, I kept gerbils as pets and I bred them.
And my 2 cents to you is... stick with rats or mice. The gestation period for gerbils is longer, and they're litters aren't as large.

And, they aren't as productive as breeders. So, in MHO you just bought yourself some cute pets LOL.

They should breed eventually, the cycle may take awhile though. And oh man,... the babies are adorable!

Rats are more nutitious and I would think gerbils or hamsters would plug snakes up, just my 2 cents worth as well.

One reason I bought them was for my kids. I had rats and mice before and I thought I would try something else. Right now all I need are babies for feeders. I am going to start back up my mouse rack in a month or so and that holds 6 groups of 1.3.
Thanks
