What kind of map turtle is this?

CDP75 Sep 18, 2004 05:34 PM

I just got home with my babies and they are so cute. I got them from a reptile show today. When I asked what they were all I was told was map turtle. Can ya'll tell from the pictures what kind of map turtle they are?
I'm just so tickled b/c the are so cute and tiny. They're loving their basking spot and only move once for a little swim.

From all the pictures I just found, they look like a mississippi map.

If the crecent mark cuts off the necklines from reaching further up the head, then you are correct. Nice turtles!

We have to think of names next, now they we can tell them apart...one has a circle behind it's right leg and the other turtle has a line. Their patterns don't change do they??

Definately a False Map (Graptemys Pseudogeographica).
Identifiable by the head markings.

The yellow stripes on the head of a Miss. Map curve down under the eye making a crescent shape & they usually have a white Iris w/ no bar through it, although they do sometimes have eyes like the False Map.

I figured it out for sure a few days ago when I was looking them up online. I found more pictures with better shots of their heads. Then I saw the last 2 replies here today. I'm glad I finally know what they are. They are just so cute and doing great. They're actually pretty friendly too.

NOT a Mississippi Map (Graptemys kohni) but a False Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeograhica). The line through the eye and the short head bar are definitive, Miss. maps have a striking white sclera (area around pupil) with no line and a head bar that surrounds the entire rear of the eye.
