Newt changing colour

omani Sep 19, 2004 12:17 AM

I have two fire bellied newts and one hong kong (warty) newt. The hong kong and one fire belly came together from my daughter.
Both fire bellies were quite black with bright orange spotted undersides. Now, one of them is changing colour to an olive brown, almost matching the hong kong's colour. I have also noticed that it's tail is getting flatter, with an orange stripe running along the top. There is also a cream coloured spot on either side of the tail.
Is this something to worry about? I do weekly water changes, scrub down their habitat once a month and feed every three days. I haven't seen any changes in the other two.

Thanks in advance,
Sandy

sounds like breeding coloration.

The newt that's changing colour is larger than the other and seems to be rather "well fed", judging from the girth about the middle. I have also noticed that the blacker one and the hong kong newt have larger "bumps" at the base of their tails. Are those males?
One other odd thing. I saw the hong kong newt come up to the lighter fire belly, bring his tail forward and vibrate the tip. What was that all about? A warning or an enticement?
I have had these guys for only a few months and want to be sure that I'm doing the right things for them.
Thanks for the help,
Sandy
