Metronidazole & feeding response.

David W. Sep 19, 2004 09:15 AM

Might be the wrong forum to post this on since Indigos are sensitive to Metronidazole in the doses given to most snakes but Fry & others report that metronidazole in low doses has caused anorexic snakes to start eating ( don't believe I've read the explanation for this) Has anyone ever tried this on hatchlings that won't eat. No I will not try this on my baby Drymarchon, have a hell of a time with this small a dose and there are better ways to go, but I have time on my hands & think too much sometimes.

Yes, I have seen the reports of using Metro to stimulate feeding. However, I'm not so sure it's such a great idea. Metro isn't the safest drug in the world. I'd rather stick with using B-complex supplements and assist-feeding or tube-feeding until the appetite picks up.

As far as how it actually works, I have my ideas. I don't think it's actually the drug that stimulates the appetite. I think that probably these anorexic snakes were plagued by some (undiagnosed) flagellate that the Metro eventually killed off and then they just regained their natural apetite.
