What turtle is good for someone who never had turtles before. I have had frogs and toads if that helps

I'd go for a painted turtle. They don't get too huge and they are friendly and pretty. Go to Austin's Turtle Page for more info on them.

Hi John,

A Red earred slider, map, cooter, or painted are all good beginner turtles. I personally like maps and cooters, maps because of color and cooters because of their great personality. These two turtles can get larger than a painted, ranging from 5"-13" as compared to 4"-9" with a painted. I would suggest looking at all of these turtles and choosing the one that appeals to you. These turtles also can be housed together if you decide to add one later on.

Whatever you select, make sure to do your homework on the necessary equipment you need to raise a healthy, happy turtle.

Good Luck.
