Its way to dark a pic to get a comfimed ID. Where was it collected as it appears from the as a garter
I agree. The pic is way to dark to ID positively. Head shape definately looks like a garter though. Only way to narrow it down would be info on where it was collected and a better pic.
Also, watch out because it looks as though that snakes about to defecate. LOL

it looks like a melanistic garter to me, i had one for about a year, the blue under belly gives it away in my opinion....
I can Identify that species perfectly because it happens to be one of the species native to my area. That is called a Northwestern Garter Snake. What really give sit away is it's dark color and it's reddish dorasal stripe. Same species I have in my area. And to the person who said it was melanistic, I beleive melanisitcs are pure black with no pattern. But anywho, Northwestern Garter Snake.
