Floor Tile as a substrate

triad Sep 19, 2004 02:21 PM

I read that you can use rile like you would put on a floor as substrate for gecko's. That it's easy to clean and they can't get their toes stuck to it like reptile carpeting.

Is it ok? I was thinking about putting it in there with mine. I have a 100 W UVB bulb in there with her also.

Is there any chance that the tile could heat up too much from such a high watt bulb and burn her belly?

YES!!! It is practically the best thing you can use! I HIGHLY recomend it! I'm sure others here will too. I use the plastic kind (or the flexible) whatever you want to call it. It's very easy to put down, you can just cut it with scissors. Hope this helps.

I dont know if it would burn or not but i dont use that kind of tile because once you put it down its hard to get off and the constant heat warped the tile.

I've been using it for a whil and I haven't had a problem. Rmember to put two tiles on the warm side though or it will get to hot unless you have a rheostat.

There's a temp gauge in her tank.

We got really expensive tile, it's about 1/2 thick. So do I need to put more in or no? It would also become uneven, so if I do need to put another piece of tile in on the warm side shall I also do the same to the cool side?

OK, first make sure you have something to cut it with....lol.

If you don't like the idea of it being uneven, it won't hurt to put another tile in. I think one tile will be enough if they're 1/2 thick. It really depends on how hot your UTH gets. Feel free to ask any more questions.

I use the big, heavy tiles. They cost about $1.50 - 2.00 each. I also put playsand in between because I just smashed them with a hammer to make it more naturalistic and random. the tiles hold heat pretty well.
One pic is a construction pic the other is a fat happy gecko relaxing in its new home...

tiles work great. I use ceramic tile with a UTH and spot light heating the best way to find out if it will be to hot is to use some type of temp gun they are cheap and work great. Its worth the investment.Hope this helps with your ?

I'm using the tile for my leo gecko. I'm thinking about changing my bearded to a tile substrate also since his toes also get stuck in the reptile carpet I got.
