Humidity / Ventilation?

CaptainHook2 Sep 19, 2004 04:43 PM

What humidity level is preferred? I have a digital temp/humidity gage and it stays around 69%-71% humidity consistently. When the misting system kicks in it jumps to 75%-77% until the water burns off and my burm still won't shed a full skin. What does come off is real moist and plyable but what stays behind gets dried out and flaky.

Also, is there a formula for ventilation such as Cage space versus temperature = square inches of ventilation? I currently have 36 CF of space in the cage not counting the undertank hide or soak sink. I used 2 4" round shower drain screens for ventilation right at the middle of the front of the cage. I cut a 30" X 12" hole in the top of the hot side which was supposed to be the entry to the next level. If he stops climbing like he did in the other cage I will not build the second level. The large hole is screened off but I re-installed the piece I cut out. What this does is gives me increments I can now remove until I get the right amount but what is the right amount?

You really want the humidity level a little higher. The levels are fine when the mister is working but in my opinion falls a little low when the mister is off. I would suggest setting your mister to go off a little sooner/more often. Then monitor the levels for a day or two and see what is happening. I always to to shoot around 75% constant humidity and bump up to 80% during shed cycles. As far as the ventilation, I personally do not know of any formula or anything. Rob is a bit more scientific and schooled then I am so maybe he can help out a little in that matter. Hope this helps a little, Todd
