How many gallons are my tanks?

NomadOfTheHills Sep 19, 2004 06:14 PM

Alright, this may be a stupid question, but it has always been buggin me. For my herps I am limited to using tanks as I'm 16 and my mom is female dog, lol.

What I always believed to be ten gallon tanks look to small to hold ten gallons of water, so I have the dimensions:

L 20
H 10
W 12

And my main quesiton, my so called 50 gallon hexagonal tank. I don't think its really a 50 gallon, so maybe you guys can help:

231 cubic inches per gallon is all you need to know.

>>What I always believed to be ten gallon tanks look to small to hold ten gallons of water, so I have the dimensions:

>>L 20
>>H 10
>>W 12

20" x 10" x 12" = 2400 cubic inches

2400 divided by 231 = 10.39 gallons.

Now you probably provided the outside dimensions so the tank probably holds slightly less than 10.39 gallons.

>>And my main quesiton, my so called 50 gallon hexagonal tank. I don't think its really a 50 gallon, so maybe you guys can help:

I'm not going to write out all the math here.

But if all sides are indeed equal to 10 inches then the tank has a volume of 6235 cubic inches.

That's equal to about 27 gallons.

I don't think the tank calculators previously mentioned include hexagon tanks so I did the math by hand.

Hope this helps.
