Update and more questions on mite problem

thescubadude Sep 19, 2004 07:32 PM

Let me start by saying I have switched to newspaper (no more wood chips) for my cage liner. I have been using a mite spray that I picked up from a local pet shop and it seems to be working so far. It hasn't wiped out the problem, but the mites are definately getting less.
Now for my questions, I guess the first one is simply, how often should I be treating my snake (the label doesn't mention frequency of use)?
Next, and probably my biggest concern, he has what appears to be a very large amount of mites in his mouth area (the white area on his entire lower jaw) how should I go about treating this area as I don't want to get the pesticide in his mouth or on his eyes.
Last but not least, my snake has always been an absolute sweetheart, never once taken a nip at me. However, after spraying him with the mite spray I took my first official "Burm Bite", really took me by surprise and he tried a few more times to tag me after that. I did get finally get a hold of him again and he seemed fine after a few minutes but am hoping this is just a freak occurance or should I be concerned about this sudden (although short) change in attitude.

Thanks in advance for you advice,

What brand of treatment are you using. They are all different and no one should give you any advice without knowing what actual type you are using. For the mites on his mouth and lower jaw area you could try using vegtable oil and a q-tip. You will probably have to hold his head while doing this so do not be surprised if you get tagged. I bet that once the mites have been eradicated and your handling sessions are back to normal then your snakes attitude will go back to normal also. Lastly di you read the article at vpi.com entitled "the war on mites". It is a must read for everyone, especially those dealing with mites. Todd

I noticed my burm has small black dots near the 2 center pits and on his lower lip in front of his mouth. They look like coloration but I don't remember seeing them before. I always believed mites were exterior but these seem to be under his "clearcoat" if you will. They also do not move. Please advise.
