My leo bit her cagemate! HELP

Aeromeggy Sep 19, 2004 08:15 PM

I got 2 female leos today, almost full grown, same size. I put them in the same enclosure, and witnessed them laying together beside the humid hide earlier. Just now I was feeding them mealworms. The one wouldn't eat anything, but the other eas eating like a champ when it bit the non-eating one's tail! It grabbed on and started pulling the other one...I'm surprised it didn't lose its tail. Do you think the one mistook the other's tail for a mealworm?

I separated them right away, but the bite did break the skin...no blood, but the skin on the tail is broken...you can see where she was bit. Is there anything I should do? Is infection a worry? Should I keep them seperated permanently or just for feeding? Thanks for the help in advance.

First question is first....were they together when you bought them? If not then they shouldn't have been together in the first place, just to be safe of any parasite etc... Second sometimes you get a bully and if that is the case then you don't want to put them together at all. We have a couple bullies and they will hog all the food...As for now I think I would keep them separate.

VERY VERY smart to take her out!! That's the first thing you should always do. It could've mistaken her tail for a mealworm but if not try introducing them again in a few days. Put some antibiotic cream on the wound and it should be fine. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much...I put some Bacitracin (sp?) on the wound. I am going to keep them seperate for a few days like you suggested, then try to reintroduce them and see how it goes..under close supervision of course.
