Acanthurus help please!

chrisse Sep 19, 2004 11:03 PM

Hello everyone!

My name is Christian and i live in Sweden. I bought recently a pair of adult V. acanthurus from a Danish breeder. He said that the female is probobly pregnant. The female where big when i got them, but it is over three weeks since then and she does not do any effort to dig in the terrarium what so ever.

So my question is: How long do acanthurus go with the eggs inside before egglaying?

It´s possible for me to photograph her, and show you all how big she really is. But it will take a few days beofore that, because it is´nt my camera.

Best regards
Chrisse

Since no one is answering, I'll give you some things to think about.

You do not know she is gravid, she could just be fattened up, and ready to cycle.

Providing different options/places to nest is always a good idea.

I don't typically see nesting or copulation with ackies, it just seems to happen. I wouldn't write off the no digging part completely, but I would be very nervous about making any big changes unless they were very necessary.

Lastly, do you have reason to not believe the breeder they came from? Unless there is something going on (you don't trust him/her), that could be your best source of information.

Good Luck,

I disagree on the nesting and copulation part, in mine atleast, they do both outwardly.

What concerns me most is that if she is gravid it was a very stupid idea to ship her. That is almost always very very bad.

but exactly how can you disagree with 'I don't typically see nesting or copulation with ackies'?

true enough. But they do copulate and nest out in the open in some venues, that much is true.

cheers, andrew

No worries Andrew. I just didn't say they didn't do it in the open, it's more about the fact it is possible to just miss it (Nesting itself seems to happen very quickly, at least with my ackies). Sometimes copulation is next to impossible to miss, other times it just 'must' have happened.

Could it be because you don't sit in front of the window watching them, giggling like a teenager that stole his first playboy? We all know Andrew loves his lizard porn. HAHAHA

Hello again!

Are there any website where i can see how "fat" a normal female looks like?

More information about my pair:

I bought them i august from a danish breeder, they are 4 years old and captive breed from germany originally.

The female are at least twice as "fat" then the male just now. She eats with good apatite(?)
