Ed -- Aldabras & Cooler Temps.??

sctortplace Sep 20, 2004 07:44 AM

The people who were so concerned with cooler temps. and their redfoot got me thinking. We've kept Aldabras for just over a year (one yearling+ and one about three years.) They spend all of the summer in an outdoor pen. We're in SC, so our really cool weather doesn't usually start til late Oct. to Nov. (when the tortoises start going into their heated house at night.) Oddly, for the last few days we've had a very short cool snap:
highs in the mid to high 70's and nights in the mid 50's - no rain and dry, with low relative humidity. In about two days we'll be back to the mid and higher 80's, with lows at or above 60, which is typical for this time of year.

With our other outdoor tortoises, we've generally not been concerned with lows down to 60, or even a few degrees into the 50's in dry conditions, as long as each cool night was followed by a warm, sunny day. From a temp. standpoint, what's proper Aldabra husbandry in these conditions?

I don't think I'd ever say that this is the 'proper' care but it does seem to work for some people.

In my area the evening temperatures are also dipping. I believe we are in very similar climatic zones.

I provide evening heat all year around except on the uncommon nights when the temperatures are abouve 75 or 80.

I'm sure you got a good chunk of change invested in the animals.

I'd rather not take a chance although they do seem to be able to tolerate some pretty chilly temperatures.

That's why I asked, and I know you have far more Aldabra experience than I do. I certainly don't want to push it, so I guess it's time to get the outside heaters fired up.

Thanks Again!

Steve
