Snake Bites

warriorprncss3 Sep 20, 2004 09:49 AM

I currently only keep three pygmy rattlesnakes and I am getting a pair of copperheads. To you keepers out there (whether experienced or not) I have a suggestion. Please, if you already do this or have suggested it before, don't jump down my throat because I am new to this forum. I keep a printout of standard snakebite care for each type of hot that I keep in a folder tacked to the wall by the front door. That way if I were to be bitten all I have to do is grab the folder and go to the hospital where the doctors can just read the instructions before treating me. This information can be found at www.emedicine.com so please do us a favor and do something like this so you don't get delayed or wrong care. Good luck. Sera

Yes, that's been brought up before, but it's one of those things that SHOULD be brought up periodically for those who haven't heard it before (and those of us who havn't bothered yet).

I would add a couple things:
1) If you keep anything serious, on your way out remove the protocol for the exact species (or closest you have) from the folder so here's no confusion if you happen to lose consciousness along the way.

2) If you keep anything REALLY serious, keep a safety pin with your folder and pin the right protocol to your clothes to make sure it doesn't get separated from you. Better yet, a copy for the paramedics, a copy for the doctor, and a backup pinned o you...

Great thinking. Glad you mentioned all that. Its good thinking and I think I'll be adding a few extra copies of each paper and some safety pins to my folder just in case. Thanks again. Sera
