For turtles I don't know any spots in south jersey: but for other, herps the pine barrens are always fun.
For aquatic turtles, you gotta check out the D&R canal. It starts in New Brunswick and ends in Trenton I think? Hundreds of painteds, the occasional RES, and some stinkpots if you're lucky. I was REALLY lucky last year and found an s.oderatus nest as the babies were hatching!
There are also a lot of watersnakes. I've even found "mating balls" right on the path.
