Questions with feeding my L. Pyro. (Hatchlings)

jkins Sep 20, 2004 03:45 PM

I just had three of these littel guys hatch out a couple wks ago. They all shed and are looking great so now I am trying to get them to eat. I have tried F/T Pinkies, Live pinks, and brained pinks. The next method I am going to use is trying to scent the pink with an anole and lastly I will just have to feed them some lizards (don't want to do that). I am wondering if anyone out there has had any experience and is successful with getting these guys to eat. In the past I have never really had any difficulty but for some reason they are being stubborn. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

These days, I try a live pink the day they hatch and are still in the incubation box. I do it with all my babies. Amazing how many will take one then.
Anyway, after all the pinky tries, I too usually go to anole scented then skink scented pinks. Skinks are very good for the pyros in my exp. Sometimes they will take a month to feed.
Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I will definitly have to try out scenting them. Just so I know I am doing it right...to scent the pinks do you just take the lizard and rub it on the pinky? Or is there another method? I have heard of taking an anole and freezing it and then skinning it and taking the skin and wrapping it around the pinky to get them to eat. Very grewsome and I have never tried this method but I would just like know what every one else does when scenting. Thanks for any responses.

Josh, one simple way, if you have a live lizard of choice, is to put the pink in the lizard's mouth or let the lizard bite the pink to get some of his saliva on it. As much as possible.
If that isn't possible, then do as you say, or use a f/t tail that has been ground up and a drop or 2 of water added to make a paste to dab on the pink.
Be creative.

Thanks. I will give it shot and see if I can get the lizard to bite down on the pink. The tail method is also a good idea. Thanks again, Josh

The lizard tail thing works very well without the need to kill the lizard, and you can cut the tail into pieces, freeze them, and just use a small piece (thaw) when you need it. Even refreeze it a few times.

I will definitly give that a shot. Sounds kind of grewsome though. Do you just cut the tail off with a razor blade or just pull on it? Hopefully it won't resort to that. Anyways thanks again for the info.
