More bad luck--back legs aren't working right...

gavigan Sep 20, 2004 08:34 PM

This is just not Ndugu the redfoot's week...I came home from work today to find him wheezy (I have made a vet's appointment), but also having trouble walking. He looks a little wobbly when he does move around, and on a fairly regular basis his back legs "give out." When this happen, he drops into a sitting position (front legs supporting the body) and seems like he's trying to get the back ones under him again--he moves them, but it's almost like the signals between his brain and his legs are getting crossed, and the legs essentially push out behind him instead of pushing down on the ground. Before too long, he rights himself and totters off again...and then it happens all over.

I'm very worried and don't know what to do, since there's no way for me to gauge whether he's in pain or anxious or what...I am going to see the vet tomorrow morning (I don't trust the emergency vets, since none have tortoise experience), but is there anything that you think it could be or that I should tell her when I see her? He spent the day in his enclosure, so I don't think he could have eaten anything except the pothos he always nibbles...He was out in the park yesterday and nibbled dandelions, but I already confirmed with the park that they don't use pesticides...the only dietary change I can think of is that he had a small bit of red cabbage and a single bean two days ago along with his usual mix...any ideas?

I have heard that pothos can be bad for a tort along with cabbage.
