Hey everyone, please tell me if you think this cage idea will work.....

Hello, I currently have a pair of veileds in a 3x4x5 (DxWxH) separated cage. They are full grown and use hardly any of it. In an effort to save space in my bedroom I thought of a way to reconfigure it. I thought that maybe I could make a low table with short walls (8" or so) on it that the Chams can't climb, and the crickets can't jump over. Then, on top of this table, place their many potted plants and vines and all. Then suspend their fluorescent and incandecent lights from the ceiling. This way, even if they (or the crickets) do somehow end up on the floor of the cage (the top of the table,) they can't climb over the wall. No ugly cage walls, no screens to obstruct the view of the chams, no more escaped crickets. I've considered their housing requirements... My room does get up to about 75 or 78 during the day, and my room is a VERY low traffic area. No other pets can get into the room. Has anybody tried this type of set up with no cage walls? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Hey,

I did that with a pair of Jacksons. They loved it and had a total space of the entire top ceiling actually. They had several real vines that extended the entire ceiling which made my room look like a freakin jungle. LOL...it was a crazy thing but people who came to visit loved it. In each of the corners of the room (4) of course they had a nice sized plant, hung from the ceiling in which they could take refuge if they had to spend the night. Their entire area consisted of about a total of 8 plants. This was in one corner of the room, and took up the space from the floor to the ceiling and 5 feet across.

One large plant on the floor for easy access just incase they got down, which the male would do sometimes. Then I made stands at different heights so that the plants would eventually reach the top of the ceiling where the heat lamp and UV fixture was.

So that the chams would use the entire enclosure I put food at the bottom and the misting was limited to one plant only...( thats the real downfall to this setup). Without controlling the mist I would have had a very soggy room...lol...so that plant was especially equipped with a 10 gallon rubbermaid to recieve all the water. A plastic sheet, (that covered the wall and the entire cham setup on the floor was an added water capture and also kept the wall dry because I would mist the other plants also.

The chams utilized it to the greatest. I loved it while it lasted but when my male died (he was WC and so I didnt know his age, but he lived for 2 1/2 years), I took the setup down. I recently decided to get back into chams and now that I have a beautiful male Veiled I plan on giving him some freedom with a free roam but it will be limited and not to the extent that the Jacksons had. He will have a free roam but limited to one corner of the room but the length of floor to ceiling.

Just be sure you can provide the proper misting and that they can easily access the setup from the floor. Misting is the most important. Its harder to control and if you cant control it correctly the setup wont work.

Hope this helps,

Lu
