How can you tell if a snake is sleeping????

Ok ive had snakes for over a year now, and besides not moving I have no Idea how to tell if they are sleeping (since they dont close there eyes) does anyone know???

The only way I know how to tell is by the way they react when you touch them. 'Cause sometimes they jump like they didn't know you had opened the cage, and sometimes they don't.

Sometimes you can look at them and notice that their eyes are pointed in strange directions as if the muscles governing them are relaxed and the eye has just settled in an odd way.

the eyes will be looking forward and down when they are sleeping.
