Outdoor Iguana Housing in SoCal

imacbevan Sep 20, 2004 10:04 PM

I'm looking for suggestions on wall materials for an outdoor walk in cage for a rescued adult male iguana. Currently I'm considering a cage of approximately 5'deep x 8-10' long and 6' high.

The two options I'm looking at at the moment are building one of schedule 40 or 80 PVC pipe or perhaps modifing a dog run kennel. With the PVC cage, I have read to use both vinyl coated welded wire or hardware cloth or a plastic extruded mesh. I like the apparent ease of use of the plastic extruded mesh but am concerned with it's UV resistance and how strong it is under the claws of an adult male iguana. This will be his home 24/7. Power is not an issue as this is going near my tortoise compound, which has power to keep my sulcattas and leopards warm during the winter. All his lighting, heat, and humidity needs will be accomadated. Any thoughts?

I'm also interested in the dog kennel idea as I have a local manufacturer who could do it but I'm concerned with the chain link size. I can probably get a fairly small link size or perhaps a welded wire arrangement. The bonus is I can get a roof for it made of the same materials and it is really easy to put together.

If I recall the prices for the last dog run I ordered correctly, both cages would run about the same price.

Anyone played with this option in Southern California?

Thanks,

Ian

I've used the extruded green nylon mesh extensively for iggy cages it's plenty strong. It should be no problem for UV exposure as it's made for outdoor chicken enclosures.

Hope this helps.
