Help!! My new savanaah moinitor just sleeps!!

ramc24 Sep 20, 2004 10:09 PM

Anyone out there can you please help me!! My new monitor I just bought just sleeps all the time. He is on 4 inches long, still very young. He seems fine other wise, not skinny or too fat, eyes bright, he is eating crickets and some silk worms. He wakes up when you handle him and seems fine, but when you put him back in his cage he wanders around for a bit then goes back to sleep. I am not sure what is wrong with him. Is this normal for a new lizard? I have only had him for a few days. Anyone with any information that can possibly help me would be greatly appreciated.

A little more info would help. How warm are you keeping him and how hot is his basking spot? What is your setup? Is he eating a fair amount for you? And is he active in getting his bugs? That small- he is a tiny baby and babys do sleep. Heck, adults sleep.

Sorry Sonya, I forgot to include my temps for my cage. My ambient temp in the cage is 87 F. And I have a basking spot set up for him at 120 F. He is active at eating his crickets which is a good sign, but like I said he sleeps alot otherwise. Probably normal I guess, just wanted to be sure as it is my first monitor. Thanks for replying to my message though.

With your temps right and him eating a good deal of crix it is just baby monitor behavior likely. They tend to 'shut down' when overstressed and they sleep being babys....so that may be a lot. Does he have dirt to dig?

Hey Sonya, yes he has dirt to dig in, about four inches deep, a cork bark log to hide in, and a large water pan. I also noticed him out and about a bit more today so you are probably right just stress from a new home as well as being a baby. Thanks for the info though and appreciate any more you can give me as it is my first monitor.
