paper towels are always the best(in my opinion). they're easy to clean up and safe for the dragons. however, play sand just looks cool, so long as its clean and fine enough.

I use indoor/outdoor carpet for the older two and paper towels for the baby.

after my dragon was a year old, i swapped paper towels for play sand. he hasn't had any problems with it but it does get dirty fast especially if he's a sloppy eater. You'll need to swap it out every so often. never throw crix in there cuz they'll ingest them along with sand. and put some sort of barrier between the sand and his food dish so that if food does get kicked out of the dish, there's less chance of it getting covered in sand.

I have seen my dragon eat food covered in sand and can hear him make crunching noises. this is scary thing to watch indeed.

I used paper towel with babies, plastic table cloth with my adult. If I get more bearded dragon babies will use the plastic table cloth or non stick shelf liner from hatch to death. It's just soo easy to spot clean and keep clean and sterile. Never had any problems with parasites, funky smells or anything. Crickets can't get underneath the table cloth if you tape it down securetly and with some paper towel underneath, it absorbed any leakage that soaks through the plastic (through cracks, little claw holes etc). I haven't used the non stick shelf liner but it sounds just as beneficial and i plan to switch to that once I run out of plastic table cloth (bought about 100'x 3' for $20 CDN, nearly a year ago now, still have about half the roll left).
